Special Squad Groups

Every week, Cloud & Fire students spend half an hour with their “Squad Groups,” small groups led by teachers and staff where students can share how they are doing and encourage the other members of their squad. Each group spends their time differently, from journaling to trying poetry exercises to just talking about the week.

A couple of weeks ago, faculty organized special events for the Squad Groups. For the guys, there was a time learning about men’s grooming, “Guy Time,” according to Mr. Carlos. Students discussed appearance and hygiene and what it takes to look sharp whether they’re at school or at work. They covered some life skills: the basics of ironing, how to do a proper shave, and even the best way to tie a tie. It was a great time for the students to bond with and learn from their teachers.

For the ladies, there was a time of food and fellowship, enjoying a potluck style lunch with taco salad and baked goods. Mrs. Rossi also led the girls into a time of deep conversation by posting up signs all over the room which 20161018_122036.jpgdescribed topics including college, family, jobs, and more. Students were told to gather under the sign that read the topic currently on their mind, then discuss it with the group that had formed. It turned out to be a time of real, deep conversation as the girls felt safe enough to share about the very real and prominent issues affecting their lives.

Both groups loved the time they got to spend together and have asked the staff for more opportunities like this. It was a great way for all the squads to interact and build a stronger community. Special squad group time will definitely happen again and very soon!
